Our Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-cutting and Basic Felling up to 200mm training course will provide candidates with the appropriate techniques and safety guidelines to ensure they are confident when using a chainsaw and felling small trees up to 200mm diameter. 

Who is it for?

This course is aimed at those who may occasionally use a chainsaw for personal use, to help them learn the basics of non-professional chainsaw use, including safety aspects. This course is not suitable for a professional chainsaw user. 

Course content

  • HSE legislation and safety guidelines
  • Chainsaw maintenance, including daily checks, chain sharpening, and power unit maintenance
  • Starting the chainsaw and pre-cutting tests
  • Cross-cutting timber
  • Chainsaw Basic Felling Techniques (up to 200mm diameter)
  • Risk assessment and emergency procedures on a worksite
  • Assess and prepare trees to be felled, identifying escape routes
  • Fell small trees (diameter up to 200mm) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques
  • Branch removal – snedding and de-limbing
  • Take down hung-up trees using hand tools
  • Clearing site and post-use chainsaw checks

Pre-requisites: None

Notes: This is a Lantra Training of Competence course, not a Level 2 Qualification. As such, it cannot be used as a pre-requisite for any further chainsaw qualifications, and is not suitable for professional chainsaw operators. 

Learners will require…

Equipment:

  • Chainsaw (max bar length 15”) – shorter is better!
  • Petrol/oil mix in an appropriate container
  • Maintenance tools, if possible (we can provide if necessary)
  • Felling lever (we can provide if necessary)

PPE:

  • Chainsaw boots (BS EN ISO 17249)
  • Chainsaw trousers, type A (BS EN 381-5)
  • Helmet (BS EN 397 or BS EN 14052) 
  • Ear defenders (BS EN 352-1, BS EN 352-2, or BS EN 352-3)
  • Eye protection mesh visor (BS EN 1731)
  • Work gloves
  • Personal 1st aid kit
