Level 2 Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue and Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness

When becoming an aerial chainsaw user, this Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue combined with Use of a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness course offers candidates the opportunity to complete training for both City and Guilds units concurrently.

Aerial tree work can be very dangerous, so quality training is essential. This combined course will provide candidates with key knowledge, skills, and practical guidance so they are able to work safely and securely in the trees, whilst using a chainsaw.

Basic Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue – Unit 203 (CS38 as was)

Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness – Unit 204 (CS39 as was)

Who is it for?

Our Tree Climbing & Aerial Rescue, and Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness training is aimed at those who work in forestry, arboriculture, and conservation industries, who need to operate a chainsaw from up the tree. This training will prepare candidates for their Level 2 assessments.

Candidates who enrol on this course will already have their Level 2 qualifications in Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-cutting and Felling up to 380mm (C&G units 201 and 202, previously CS30 & CS31)

This is a physically demanding course, so a good level of physical fitness is essential. 

Course Content

  • Legislation relating to tree climbing and the use of a chainsaw from a rope and harness
  • Identify hazards and manage the associated risks
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Inspecting climbing harnesses and identifying features
  • Tie, dress, and set a range of tree climbing knots
  • Tree climbing anchor points
  • Techniques for safe, efficient ascent and descent
  • Understand the duties of a competent ground person
  • Establish safe and comfortable work positions
  • Pruning positions and branch removal techniques
  • Aerial rescue techniques
  • Safety considerations to be observed in organising a work site
  • Pre-start checks to the chainsaw, cold and hot starting techniques
  • Techniques for hauling chainsaws into the tree and attaching them appropriately to the harness
  • Techniques for establishing secure and comfortable work positions
  • Appropriate use of various step and sink cuts and correct final pruning cuts
  • Use of top-handled and lightweight rear-handled chainsaws
  • Removal of light and medium weight branches
