Professional Tree Inspection
This Lantra three-day course aims to provide specific tree inspection training at an advanced level for competent arboriculturists. Successful completion of this course should enable candidates to clearly and competently inspect potentially hazardous trees and identify defects from ground level, from a climbed inspection, or from a Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP)*, in order to write appropriate and detailed remedial works (control measures).
*Tree climbing and use of MEWP will not be required during the course
Who is it for?
In order to be considered for this course, prospective learners should be experienced and qualified arboriculturists with in-depth knowledge of plant and arboricultural science. This will need to include a thorough knowledge of wood decaying fungi, identification and interpretation of signs and symptoms of ill health and structural failure across a wide range of tree species and circumstances.
Candidates will need to be thoroughly experienced in carrying out tree inspections and surveys and will be professionally involved in arboriculture, specifically tree inspection.
Course content
- The role of the tree inspector in risk management
- The legal framework, including duties and liabilities of owner, manager, and inspector
- Functions of a tree system, what constitutes a safe tree, keeping trees in a healthy/safe state
- Systematic and consistent methodology for visual tree inspections at an advanced level
- Collecting data in the field in accordance with inspection instructions
- Recognise a range of observable mechanical and biological defects as seen in trees, and confirm by using textbooks where necessary
- Identifying common pests, diseases, and disorders that affect tree safety
- Appropriate control/remedial measures required to eliminate or reduce risks
- Hazard evaluation
- Decay detection and measuring equipment

Pre-requisites: Candidates must be experienced in Tree Inspection, carrying out tree surveys, and making management recommendations.
Ideally, candidates should hold a minimum level 3 qualification in Arboriculture and have an in-depth knowledge of plant and arboricultural science.
