Emergency Treework Operations is a Level 3 qualification, now certificated by Lantra Awards. This training covers the required knowledge and skills for dealing with hazardous trees, including individual windblown trees and trees requiring assisted felling techniques. The course coverage also includes emergency procedures and safety considerations of the worksite.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at those preparing and agreeing to undertake emergency treework operations. The training includes the safe preparation and undertaking of emergency or urgent tree works typically as a result of tree failure, vehicular accident, or weather-related emergencies.
Course content
- Health and safety, industry good practice, and relevant legislation
- Potential hazards of working in different types of sites and situations
- Initiating and maintaining communication and team work when carrying out emergency treeworks
- Record keeping related to emergency treework operations
- Procedures for dealing with emergencies and emergency services
- Appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Minimising environmental damage and disposal of waste in line with legislation
- Pre-start checks setting of the machine for use and safe starting of the chainsaw
- Making the working area safe with suitable access routes as required
- Securinge the tree root-plate, or other unstable structures, with appropriate equipment
- Safety precautions when using winches
- Methods for severing root plates
- Assisted fell operations appropriate to tree form and site conditions
- Use of appropriate pulling equipment for the assisted fell of a range of tree types/weights
- Principles of tree crown breakdown including supporting branches and tension and compression
- Planning requirements for any subsequent work and site clear up

- 2-stroke fuel and saw chain oil
- Felling and lifting aids e.g.:
- felling lever
- felling wedges and hammer
- timber tongs/hook
- turning strap
- 6 tonne (minimum) hand winch and compatible strops
- Hand pulling rope with prussic loops, pulleys and karabiners
- PPE:
- Chainsaw boots
- Chainsaw trousers
- Work gloves
- Forestry helmet with mesh visor and ear defenders
