Level 2 Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-cutting, and Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm (previously City & Guilds CS30/CS31)
Our chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting and felling up to 380mm (15″) course will provide candidates with the appropriate techniques and safety guidelines to ensure they are safe and confident when using a chainsaw at work.
Our training is delivered by experienced instructors to small groups, so candidates receive group and individual attention.
Who is it for?
Our chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting and felling up to 380mm course is suitable for anyone who maintains and operates chainsaws for cross-cutting and is required to fell small trees up to 380mm (15″). This course is physical, so delegates must be fit and able to carry out the tasks required of the course.
The course will prepare candidates for the Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-cutting, Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm, which is a required qualification for using chainsaws at work.
Course content
- Health and Safety and risk assessment
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Safety features on a chainsaw
- Saw condition and maintenance, in accordance with the manufacturer manual
- Prepare the chainsaw for use with the correct fuel/oil mix and chain lubrication
- Start the chainsaw from both cold and hot in a safe manner
- Pre-cutting safety tests and procedures
- Cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths
- Tension and compression in timber
- Safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar
- Handle and stack timber in a safe manner
- Site safety and precautions
- Risk assessment and emergency procedures on a work site
- Tree felling techniques (guide bar length not to exceed 380mm/15″)
- Safe methods to fell leaning trees
- Accurate cuts and positioning
- Delimbing felled trees
- Safe methods for takedown of hung-up trees

Equipment:
- Chainsaw (max bar length 15”) – shorter is better!
- Petrol/oil mix in an appropriate container
- Maintenance tools, if possible (we can provide FOC)
- Felling lever, if possible (we can provide FOC)

- Chainsaw boots (BS EN ISO 17249)
- Chainsaw trousers, type A (BS EN 381-5)
- Helmet (BS EN 397 or BS EN 14052)
- Ear defenders (BS EN 352-1, BS EN 352-2, or BS EN 352-3)
- Eye protection mesh visor (BS EN 1731)
- Work gloves
- Personal 1st aid kit
